2. BOGOR - pamper yourself in 5* Hotel
Bogor and Sentul are the nearest green destinations from Jakarta. There are some nice 4 and 5 star hotels.
Royal Tulip Gunung Geulis resort is probably the best hotel in the region. It is a truly 5* hotel, surrounded by a beautiful green golf course.

Royal Tulip is my kid's favourite hotel. It is a good place if you want to get pampered. Breakfast is delicious, pizza and steaks are yummy. Saturday morning you can join a free Yoga class on an epic terrace surrounded by scenic mountains.
For small children there is a kids' corner. For older ones, there is table tennis, bicycles (roads are a bit too much up and down), or you can go for a walk around the hotel.
Recently, the hotel has been fully booked on weekends and public holidays, so we prefer to go here on a Sunday or during week, when it is quiet (make sure that there is no conference during your stay).

Other hotels that we have tried in the region are: Rancamaya in Bogor, Novotel Bogor, Aston Hotel in Sentul and Pullman in Puncak. They all offer a nice getaway from busy Jakarta.
Websites:
Royal Tulip Gunung Geulis resort - our favorite Rancamaya in Bogor - we liked animals that are around hotel (rabbits, deer) Novotel Bogor - old hotel, but offers many activities Aston Hotel in Sentul - hotel is next to Taman Budaya that offers various activities for children like pony rides, fish feeding, coloring class (see Day trips from Jakarta for more info). Rooms were very small. Pullman in Puncak - nice, but my family prefers Royal Tulip Mandapa Kirana Resort - nice place, have a trek to a waterfall, food is ok-ok, entry fee Rp 50 000 which is adjusted in food. |
3. Puncak
Call a reliable guide and let him take you on an awesome walk through the picturesque tea plantations!
The walk can be 2-3hrs depends on your choice and stamina!

It is possible to go to Puncak for one day only, as we did it with IHS Explorers Hiking group.
If you prefer to hike by yourself with a guide, you can contact guide Pak Dedi +62 857 1738 9077 . When we went there with IHS, we paid Rp 300 000 per pax (3h hike), price might be different if you contact Pak Dedi directly. |
4. Kawah Ratu, Mount Salak + The Michael's Resort
Enter the woods, walk to small waterfalls, enjoy beautiful gardens and go hiking to Mount Salak volcano
or Kawah Ratu! These are some of the activities you can anticipate doing if you choose to visit Mount Salak and The Michael’s Resort for a getaway weekend. Hiking to Kawah Ratu is a real highlight.
It is not far from Jakarta, but go early in the morning to avoid the traffic.

The Michael’s Resort
The landscape at the The Michael’s Resort is gorgeous, attention is paid to every detail.
The rooms are simple, but you can have two rooms connected for a family stay. Villa Cempaka may look ideal, but can be a bit noisy with the main road just behind it.
If you wish for a more fancy room, choose one of the villas, but they are more pricey.
The restaurant is good, just a bit slow and they may run out of certain items on the menu!
The pool is nice, but cold!

Waterfalls
If you are not up to climb Mount Salak, you can still choose a short walk to one of at least 7 waterfalls in the area.

Mount Salak
The hike is doable with kids 7 years and older, but be prepared for mud, water, and a slippery trail.
Once you climb up to the volcano, you are in the crater, be careful and look around for hot spots and fuming sulphur.
It is not a difficult hike for the kids and they will be proud to reach a real volcano crater!

A Marine national park said to be the white sand beach paradise accessible from Jakarta.
It might not always be the case. Our expectations tend to be high! If you are interested in going to any of the islands, research, read and talk to people who visited.
Also, mind that this is not cheap!

We can recommend three islands:
Desa Laguna
NEW!
Newly open ecoresort with 3 beautiful seaside huts, 4 quality ‘glamping’ tents, and 4 camping tents. Offering opportunity to plant mangrove tree.
The team originally managed resort on Pulau Macan (see below), but in 2021 it moved to Desa Laguna. The resort is built on a very similar ethos as Pulau Macan, and their huts are even a little better, and they'll be taking 'eco' and regenerative to a whole new level in 2023 as they go deeper into research and conservation for coral reefs, mangroves, algae and sea grasses.
We haven't been here yet, but it was recommended by other JIS families.

Pulau Macan/Tiger Island - worth a visit as this actually is the heaven you may be looking for! Unique, compared to other islands, it offers a calm and private atmosphere.
Paradise island with pristine blue waters and white sand beaches, beautiful open natural cottages with no air conditioning, just fresh air waving through the mosquito nets above your bed…
The island has its own water conservation and waste management system. There is no plastic on the island.
Be aware that the daily visitor quota is limited so you might be on a waiting list before your trip is confirmed.
Recommended by friends - make sure that you stay in the cottage by the sea. Since they do not use air conditioning it gets very hot in the wooden cottage in the garden.

Pulau Macan consists of two islands, Macan Besar Island where there is the resort and Macan Kecil - this small island is only visible at low tide, and the highlight is that you can reach it only by foot from Macan Besar.
We understand that it is not really suitable for swimming here but paddle boarding is just fantastic!

Pulau Pelangi - we visited in October 2021. This beautiful island requires lots of maintenance, same as many other islands in the area.
Surroundings
The water is beautiful, absolutely clean and warm.
The beach is nice, white coral sand, with instagramable swings above the water, free kayak to play around with, trees for the shadow, with few wooden sun beds.
There are lots of plants and flowers that make the area and whole place around the main lobby look very pleasant and cosy.
We tried to walk around the island but unfortunately we were put away by lots of trash on the other side of the island.
Cottages
The cottages are huge, mats and sheets are clean, the air condition is functioning well, there is mosquito net. Shower is hot, western toilet but overall the bathroom is very simple and deeper cleaning would be required.
Diving
Our main reason for coming was enjoying the sea and fresh air and also diving. We were very happy with the service and everything related. Although, it is not Raja Ampat, we were still able to see beautiful corals, fish, the visibility was good and the dive guides were wonderful, experienced divers diving in the area every weekend for many years and helpful and kind people with good english.
Fun activities
Banana boat and flying boat were absolute hits even though they charge you additionally for those. Our kids enjoyed it greatly.
Kids playground if small but fun. Ping-pong table was occupied by our kids all the time!
Restaurant, food and drinks
The restaurant looks gorgeous built on the stilts above the water but again, requires maintenance. You must be careful and watch your steps for loose woods on the outside path around the restaurant.
The food was simple but good, choice of noodles and rice, vegetable, fruit, soup, chicken, and bbq chicken and fish for Saturday night was great. Bring your own cereal and uht milk for breakfast if your kids are fussy eaters.
We brought our own beer and kept it in our own cooling portable fridge.
Otherwise few beers, some sodas, and always water, tea and coffee is available.
Transportation
One of the positives were the great boats we travelled with. We had a private speed boat for our group of 3 families only, new clean and spacious boat leaving from the Pantai Mutiara in North Jakarta.
The second boat of the same standard carried another 2 families and all the dive masters and staff that travelled to the island for the weekend.

Pulau Sepa - THE WHOLE ISLAND IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT THE MOMENT in October 2021 and it is not possible to visit - We visited the island a few times during the past years. Without a doubt Pulau Sepa it has one of the best beaches you can look for; soft white sand, long and beautiful!
And it is absolutely suitable for children as swimming is safe. The long strip of white soft sand descends slowly into shallow turquoise water. The beach is partially covered by trees so you can either sunbath or enjoy the beach from a shady spot. Take plenty of “sand toys” for small kids.
You or your teenager can rent a kayak or you all can have fun on a banana boat.

You can also dive (and snorkel) at Pulau Sepa, but be sure to go early morning for better visibility. Beautiful corals are growing underneath the jetty or even more exciting are the schools of newly planted corals! Great job done here!
The restaurant serves a buffet of local food, Mie goreng and Nasi goreng are always safe and tasty and the fish is quite a highlight.
A live band plays every Saturday night and you are very welcome to join in the karaoke :) Music stops at 10pm.
Cottages - make sure you book the Turtle/Penyu cottages as they are the best you can get. The further you are from the restaurant, the better. The cottages are simple, please, do not expect too much!
Animals - giant monitor lizard, casuari bird, flying foxes.

Sarong for the beds on the beach. Sickness pill for the boat, sometimes the ride is very bumpy.
When to go: you can go for a ½ day trip or stay overnight, leave from Ancol Marina harbour at 8am, the boat back for Jakarta leaves the island at 2pm, the journey takes 1,5-2hrs.
Where from: Marina Ancol harbour, North Jakarta

7. Ocean Queen Resort, Cimaja beach club - South Coast of West Java
Ocean Queen Resort Hotel
The resort is directly at the beach and you can hear the Indian Ocean, which is really nice. The waves are big, so it is not really recommended for swimming. Be very careful especially with kids. But they can still have fun playing in the water, running around or walking to the fishing village to watch how they bring their boats to the sea for night fishing.
Unfortunately, the hotel is 30 years old and appears not to have ever been renovated, so don't expect any luxury. Everything is old.
An absolute highlight here is grilled seafood. It is absolutely fresh and your houseboy will prepare it for you on the private grill and you can eat it in your cottage.
The hotel prepared a bonfire for our kids at night and they baked marshmallows on sticks (you have to bring the marshmallows with you).
Cottages have a kitchen - stove and fridge, so you can cook or prepare snacks or breakfast, but keep in mind that everything is old. We bought along can openers, cork screws, sharp knives, cloths to wipe surfaces.
There is a swimming pool with a covered area for the smallest kids.
The restaurant can prepare simple meals.
Ocean Queen welcomes your dog buddy!
Wifi is in Club House only.

Sawarna beach is 45 min west from Ocean Queen Resort. Waves are big but smaller than at the resort. There is a lifeguard on duty:
Cimaja Beach Club
Beautiful, small, boutique resort, built in the middle of rice fields, close to the surfing beach. The cottages are wooden and so are the walking paths around. They have a very new and very nice large swimming pool!
The views are awesome here, especially from the roof top of your cottage!
There is no beach for kids, so from here, it is recommended to spend an extra hour in the car and travel to Sawarna beach.
The food in the club's restaurant is simply delicious!
This is a dog friendly place! They have their own bunch of friendly dogs so discuss before bringing yours.

Nurda's place is a recommended restaurant, walking distance from Cimaja Beach Club. They have live music on Saturday nights, a long wooden bar, the restaurant is spacious and overlooking a green area leading to the surfing beach. Good seafood and hamburgers. They also have accommodation and our friends always stay here because of the nice owners.
There are also some villas in the region available via airbnb.com that you might consider.

8. Krakatoa/CARITA BEACH
What an exciting feeling to step onto the famous Krakatoa volcano from which was recorded one of the biggest eruptions ever in the history in 1883! The sound of the eruption travelled around the globe and was even heard in London.
Krakatoa (anak/child Krakatoa) is a deserted active volcanic island in the waters of the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra.
Krakatoa last erupted in November 2018 and was followed by a tsunami which caused damage to the west cost of Java :(

If you take the trip you can climb up the volcano, snorkel at the coral reef on the way or the tour guide can organize fishing.
The climb is absolutely suitable for children as it is not a difficult.
At the moment it is only about 100m up and it takes 15min :) You can still see the fumes rising and some soft lava! Make sure you wear closed footwear. The ash on Krakatoa can get extremely hot and burn your feet if you are wearing sandals / flip flops / thongs.
The boat takes you around the island as well as others so you can take some very special pictures!

The organizer takes you in a double engine motorboat and it takes approximately 1,5h from the harbour of Carita Beach to the volcano.
You can do it in one day, if you leave Jakarta at 5am or earlier. It will take you about 3hrs to get to Carita Beach. The tour operator will wait at Carita Beach, provide you with breakfast and then take you on a boat trip at about 8am. After climbing the volcano the boat will take you to the black beach of Rakata to provide lunch. All drinks are also included.
The whole trip can be finished at about 3pm and you can be easily back in Jakarta till 8pm depending on the evening traffic.
Or, you can stay at Carita Beach and still have some fun here and continue to Jakarta the next morning.
At Carita Beach you can visit the Anyer light house where you see the ruins of the old light house destroyed in 1883. At Carita Beach you can have fun riding on the banana boat, the sea here is very shallow.
We highly recommended to take the trip with a reliable organiser, whom we have personal experience with.

9. Tanjung Lesung
Beach, cycling, golf, nice hotel with pool
10. Mesastila Resort and spa (Dieng Plateau)
Luxury 5* hotel in beautiful nature. Not far (40km) from the famous Borobudur temple or alternatively you can drive here from Jakarta in under 6 hours. You can trek through coffee plantations and rice terraces, enjoy family activities, go horse riding or submerge yourself in yoga. The grounds are lush and beautiful and you can let your children run free and wild. The air is cooler and fresher here as you are in the mountains-bring warm clothing as you may need it in the evenings. You can also use the Mesastila as a base to explore the Dieng Plateau.
It's refreshing pool overlooks the forest and lies next to the Turkish style spa. The hotel comprises old Indonesian houses that were transported and re-erected here by the original Italian owner. The restaurant is very good, offering a range of local and Western style dishes; breakfast is delicious. And (a free) high tea is offered daily to guests. There are many mosques surrounding the resort (you will hear them at 4am and in recognition of this, guests are provided with ear plugs), but it is still amazing.

11. Baduy village
Visiting the Baduy villages is a unique experience; as well as enveloping yourself in nature (there are no cars. motorcycles, bicycles here) you can catch a glimpse of the daily activities of the shy people who make up the Baduy tribe (primarily farming. honey making and weaving). The Baduy have limited contact with the outside world and do not use any modern technology. They can often be identified by the their dress which is predominately blue with black bottoms and a white hat. The only way to reach these villages is to trek for hours along tracks through the countryside.
On arrival, you leave your car outside the Baduy area and pay an entrance fee and guide to enter the villages. (That said, my husband has cycled here but on arrival was too tired to look around the villages).
You are able to spend a day here hiking or for the more hardy, you can arrange to stay the night, an exceptional experience, in a Baduy's home (basic accommodation, sleeping on a thin mattress with a delicious meal provided - to be honest not much sleep was had). You sleep when the sun goes down, wash in the river and cannot charge your mobile phone as there generally is not electricity. You can then continue trekking further into Baduy territory the next day.
