Best things to do In Bali with kidsWritten in Feb 2021, updated in October 2021.
Bali is Bali. Some visitors to Bali don’t realize that they are in Indonesia! It is a special place with a unique atmosphere and definitely worth visiting with or without children. Bali can be very touristy, but maybe that’s why our kids enjoy it – there are so many options and attractions, everything works (compared with other parts of Indonesia) and prices are affordable.

1. Beaches
Beaches in Bali are relaxing, easy to reach, are located near good hotels, restaurants and attractions. Everything is easy.
We have been there 5x and we have always spent few relaxing days on beach.
But keep in mind that the wonders of Bali do not stop at its beaches. From an Indonesian perspective Bali’s beaches are good, but not amazing. We know some expats that were disappointed by them. If you expect stunning long white beaches then better fly to Lombok, Komodo Islands, Sumba, etc – options in Indonesia are endless!
Choose carefully. Not all beaches in Bali are the same. Party-style Kuta is very different from luxurious Nusa Dua. Beaches facing Java (e.g. Kuta, Semyniak, Canggu, Jimbaran) might be dirty during rainy season (Dec and Jan), even a management is doing a great job to clean them every morning.
The most popular beaches for expats are Nusa Dua, Sanur, Canggu and Jimbaran.
Anticipate differences in the beach between low and high tide! Low tide might be not so instagrammable, but take your flip-flops and try a walk - you will find so many sea creatures (crabs, small fishes, ...). An amazing activity for kids!

Nusa Dua Beach
The most luxurious part of Bali can be found in 5* hotels with a private beaches in Nusa Dua and for a relatively affordable price for the quality (other hotels at beaches like Kuta, Canggu, Sanur are cheaper, but not so luxurious). Many expats spend their vacation here as the whitish beach is lovely (during high tide), clean and the area is easily accessible from the airport.
It is a relatively new development created just for tourists, so you don’t really get the true Bali experience (only a little of the local culture, temples, flower offerings to the Gods etc.), but we love the place!
Some hotels offer space and programs for children (e.g. Grand Mirage Resort has family rooms in its new wing, water park, kids club, games room, free kayak trips, even a foam party).
We prefer beaches found at the following hotels: Merusaka, Melia, Grand Hyatt, Hilton, Kempinski, Ritz-Carlton. The further north you go (direction Benoa), the more extensive the low tide is.
There are only few restaurants outside of the hotels in walking distance (compare to Semyniak, Canggu or Sanur), except in the area of Merusaka and Melia where is a luxorious open shopping mall called Bali Collection with supermarket and about 20 restaurants.

Jimbaran Beach
Jimbaran beach is very famous for its beach restaurants serving seafood. While you might be staying in a luxury hotel, you might want to enjoy dinner at a bamboo table right on the beach barefoot, eating delicious shrimps and watching your kids having fun doing gymnastics on the sand.
Luxury Intercontinental Bali Resort with a clean private beach might be a good option. You might want to opt to pay the extra for the club room and facilities. Special rates are available to Kitas holders so negotiate even if you don’t yet have one.
During rainy season (Dec-Feb) the beach can get dirty.
Easily accessible from the airport.

Sanur Beach
This is a yellow sand beach with many sea-front-restaurants. You can walk on the beach early in the morning for sunrise. Mothers can enjoy canoeing with their babies. The area is not as crowded as Kuta or Seminyak, but it can get busy.
There is a 6km path by the beach where you can run, bicycle, or push your stroller. Each km has a different atmosphere but in general, the atmosphere is relaxed. There are restaurants for all budgets and it is super kid friendly.
Hotel recommendation from expats: Besakih (middle range), Grand Hyatt Sanur Hotel or Kejora Villas (top range). Try to reach them individually instead of booking through booking.com as most hotels in Bali now offer excellent deals (March 2021).
Massimo is probably one of the best Italians restaurants we have ever been.
The beach is sometimes clean but sometimes dirty (depending on currents?), but definitely not as much as beaches around Kuta.

West beaches: Canggu, Semyniak, Kuta
Popular beaches for party and for beginners surfers. Many young people, good music, after-beach parties.
Soft blackish sand with no stones, easy to walk along the beaches (you can walk easily 10 km on the beach) and play in the waves.
Not expensive, good prices for accommodation and restaurants. Expect many tourists.
Beaches are clean, but sometimes (during rainy season) currents bring rubbish from Java. From our experience, on 30th of Dec 2020 beaches were dirty, in March 2021 they were very clean, as they are cleaned every morning.
Close to the airport.

Canggu
(ChCanggu is a good area for a semi-long term stay with kids. There are playgrounds, number of restaurants and cafes, beaches, even climbing walls and stables for horse riding. Lots of expat families who are residents in Bali live here as there are two international schools. It has a community vibe and you find like minded friends in your favorite cafe, on the beach or in a yoga studio.
You will find really a wide choice of restaurants, from healthy options such as vegetarian and vegan cuisine to cultural experience - Greek, Mexican, French, Italian, Japanese, American or luxurious and stylish, or simple with easy vibes mostly located on the beaches. You will never be disappointed.
The beaches in Canggu are connected to one another and you can basically walk all along the beaches from Canggu to Seminyak.
Eco Beach - the first beach on the north, good for experienced surfers, famous for playing beach volleybal, absolutely famous for sunset, the beach gets crowded, there is many cafes/restaurants on the beach and despite they many not looks so, they serve excellent food
Batu Bolong - this is excellent beach for surfing, even for beginners and kids. The surfer school guys will advise on good waves and will not take your kid if they feel it is not safe. They will advise for the best waves for your level and you can plan for the days ahead. (Contact our reliable friend Sunny, who has had his surf shop at the beach for 20+ yrs at +6281353120195).
This beach is also fun for hanging out in the evening, there is often music playing, you can rent a sun bed, have a grilled corn, coconut or beer and just watch the people passing by and tons of Bali beach dogs playing. If you come here regularly for few days you make friends easily.
Nelayan - fisherman boats and kites lovers! You really will admire the incredible kites, Indonesian tradition goes huge and high here!
Berawa - connected beach is good for playing in the waves and boogie boarding. There is a river where many local famillies with kids like to hang out and play.
Bartu Belig - another beach for intermediates surfers going down towards Seminyak
In Canggu the water is deeper, while in Semyniak the water is shallow, so generally Semyniak is considered better for beginner surfers and small children.
Canggu beaches are sometimes very clean, sometimes dirty (depending on currents and season).
Easily accessible from the airport.
There is many restaurants along the beaches serving drinks and food. The might not all look that fancy, being build mostly on wooden stools but try them out!
Finns Beach club at Batu Belig is very popular party place with music, bar, restaurant - not ideal place for small kids, but you might consider it if you have older teenagers.
Great restaurants - that is Canggu. Large number of various kinds of places. Open and busy but just about right busy.
You will love all the different kinds of cuisine (Indonesian, Mexican, Italian, Greek..), cafes, bakeries, vegetarian, vegan... In one week of stay you will not have a chance to visit enough of them! From Perrereran to Pantai Berawa area and further more..

Seminyak Beach
Soft blackish beach, long tides, just walk or play in the waves here. Water is clean and the sand is without stones (same for the closed by beaches like Changgu and Kuta beach), so it feels very nice and soft for the feet. Sand and slope is easy to walk, so many people come out during sunset (5-7pm) to walk along the beach (we walked 4km every evening).
Suitable for SURFING for beginners and for children. Water is warm and shallow. Waves are great, but might be too small during low tide so check the best time with your surfing school in advance. Some expats families and we used Santai School Bali (+62 819 3653 81 39, WA +62 878 6164 2656), as their coaches are certified in Australia. Coach Gede speaks perfect English. Small children can surf, if they know how to swim. They have clients as young as 3 years old.
Rp 300 000 - 600 000 per person for 2 hour lesson or Rp 50 000 for surfboard rent.
Seminyak is a shopping place with many boutiques. There is entertainment and shops, restaurants and activities that are kids friendly. Our teenagers enjoyed dinner at the cool beach bar Ku De Ta.
Easily accessible from the airport.

Kuta Beach
Kuta is famous for surfing and parties, very close to the airport. It's beaches can be dirty, mostly in the rainy season (Nov - Feb).
Uluwatu beaches
Uluwatu (west Bukit peninsula, famous for the temple on a cliff) - most beaches are hard to reach as you need to climb down steep stairs from the cliffs - not a small kid friendly.
World's famous for surfing but only for experienced surfers. Do not bring your kids to learn how to surf here.
The sunsets are amazingly beautiful from all the beaches here.
Balangan
Uluwatu Hidden beach - amazing beach, hidden under the rock, worth to visit. The higlight here was watching the pro surfers from one of the cliff restaurants/warungs.
Visit beautiful Mana restaurant and resort about 5min drive from Uluwatu beach. Healthy food choices!
Dreamland - long sandy beach with hotel resorts above. Usually windy, the waves are rough so stay swimming in the infinity pool enjoying the views.
Padang Padang beach - famous and pretty, this beach is great for bathing, sandy bottom, waves ok to handle for kids if with adults. The beach is a small bay between the rocks, you can get cold coconut and water and even and umbrella. My daughter tried surfing here, it was the best out of the Uluwatu beaches but still the waves were fast, you need experience.
Bingin beach - this beach has its special vibe, popular with local expats and visitors. It gives you a "Greek" feeling with all the houses and restaurants on the cliff along the beach. The life music adds to the chilled atmosphere. Bingin is famous for fresh seafood - it is a must try!!
You cam try to surf here as an adult beginner but still be cautious as there is a stone plateau in the water along the beach.
It was very crowded last time we were, so all the romance was gone. But other times it has been empty and fantastic.
25 km from the airport, but the road is narrow, so it may take anything from 30 mins to 2 hours. Worth to visit!
There is plenty of accommodations, restaurants and shops along the net of small roads.
Try to stay on a cliff as the views are stunning. We recommend Mick's place, Mu but there is many more.

Blue lagoon beach
Blue Lagoon Beach is a nice spot in East Bali. It is a swim and snorkel beach, you see some nice corals and fish. Our friends dive here and they were amazed how crystal clear and transparent the water was. They have never seen such a see-throug water and they have been to many places.
BUT, the waves can be really big and can make it dangerous to get through them to to water.
Many people mention lots of trash (depends on currents).
Visitors usually come by boat or from shore if passing by on their way to the east-north of Bali or if staying in the Blue lagoon resort or in Padang bay.
Padang bay itself is probably not the best spot to spend your Bali vacation. Padang bay is sleepy laid back harbour. You might want to stay with the OK divers, nice dive shop and hotel and they will take you around or to Nusa Penida for diving.
Blue Lagoon resort up on the rock is, on the other hand, amazing. Specious villas with awesome views. restaurant with good food and the best views, beautiful yoga shala, great pool with slides.

Amed
Amed beach, Jemeluk and Lipah Beach, these beaches in Amed are sandy black, they are beautiful and the water is crystal clear. Some of the beaches further up are more stoney. Again, if you go in December, the visibility is worse and might be trash in the sea.
Since Amed, like its neighbouring villages is a fishing village, there are many fishering boats parked directly on the beaches.
The Amed area is the best and safest in Bali for SNORKELING and diving with the kids. Especially Amed beach or Lipah beach. With bigger kids you can also have wonderful experience snorkeling in Tulamben at the shipwreck of the USS Liberty that was sunk by a torpedo during the WWII.
Some expats take diving courses here.
You can also make trips around Amed: Tirta Gangga temple is loved by kids and if travelling there, stop on the way to visit some hidden but interesting places: Rumah Pohon Temega, Houses Tree Hill Lemped or Museum Pustaka Lontar Desa (even if the museum is closed, just enjoy walking around in the beautiful nature and enjoy an amazing view of Mt. Agung.
Amed is 100km (2,5 h) from the airport.

Virgin beach
This is a beautiful and exceptional beach in Bali. Located further down from Amed. You can buy an amazing flying boat from local craftsmen and eat some delicious fresh seafood at many warungs along the beach.
There is no accommodation nearby, you need to visit on the way to or from Amed.
70km (2 h) from the airport.

Menjangan
Menjangan is National Park in the north west of Bali. (Just across Java, 45 min by ferry.)
Menjangan is an island and there is only one resort on the island so most of the visitors actually stay at the village of Pemuteran, on the cost of Bali.
If you prefer quiet holiday, gateway from all the hustle and bustle, this is Bali's most hidden secret. Far away from all the main attractions, beautiful surroundings with ocean in the front and mountain peaks in behind. Worth to visit if you have more time to spend in Bali and must visit if you are diver or fan of snorkeling, the underwater world here is magical and unspoiled. Very suitable for beginner divers and for kids.
The beaches here are sandy, darker colour and you can safely swim in the calm waters. You can rent a bicycle, the roads here are easy and straight, visit the National Park by boat, enjoy good food and good massage.
Our tip for accommodation and diving is: Amertha villas in Pemuteran.

2. Animals
Bird Park
Amazing place with lots of birds and plants. Try to see the animals when it is their feeding time; you can participate and the birds will land of your r hands or head! Watching pelicans swallow fish and taking pictures with parrots is also exciting. You can see the baby birds in incubators at different stages of growth. The park is clean and well maintained, has a restaurant, gift shop and good toilets. The staff members are friendly and helpful.
The entrance fee for foreigners is rather steep but worth the money. Bring your KITAS to get a big discount!
Appropriate for all ages.
Allow up to 2 hours to stroll through the park.
Check the weather forecast - shows and feedings cannot take place when it is raining heavily.

Monkey forest in Ubud
This is one of the main attractions in Ubud, so expect many tourists. This area is very beautiful jungle forest where you can walk and enjoy the ambience and watch how monkeys go about their daily activities.
Rangers control the monkeys, but don’t bring any food or anything that monkeys will be tempted to steal from you (phone, sunglasses, bottles, …). Monkeys are cute but can be naughty.
Definitely worth a visit!

Mason Elephant Park
Mason Elephant Park and Lodge is the only elephant park we can recommend from an ethical point of view. This is a sanctuary, and home to 27 elephants saved from Sumatra and living with a purpose in stimulating environment. The elephants are well treated and taken care of.
You can visit for a day as there are various activities here such as a bath with the elephant, wash the elephant, ride the elephant through the bushes, or you can stay a night and enjoy dinner close by to these amazing animals.
Mason Elephant Park has been visited by celebrities including Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts, David Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Chris Smalling, Edwin van der Sar, ect.

BALI SAFARI AND MARINE PARK Gianyar
Unique Breakfast With Orangutan, Night at the zoo. The cottages overlook the green savannah with rhinos, elephants and more.
The Zoo has a safari which you ride in a small safari bus. After the bus tour you can visit the Zoo itself. It is small and you can walk around in half a day if you really want to. But be sure to visit some of the wonderful shows, especially the Elephant show which is very educational. You can even feed the white tiger here from a special door below the ground. You can also feed the elephants, by buying the special grass or baskets you support them at the same time.
Do not miss the sweet water fish tanks at the entrance to the Zoo itself. Here, you can also watch beautiful dancing performance or buy souvenirs. Plenty of small places to eat and drink but I would recommend the largest restaurant with wide choice of good food. There is also a small waterpark in the Zoo.

Bali Butterfly Park
There are two butterfly park in Bali. The first one is in Tabanan called Bali Butterfly Park (Taman Kupu Kupu Bali) and the newer addition is Kemenuh Butterfly Park in Gianyar.
Other wild life places that we didn't visit:
Horse riding - Royal sport horse riding Bali Canggu; Bali Equestrian Centre Canggu (with great restaurant)
Bali sea turtle Society BSTS, The turtle project

3. Adventure
Rafting
There are 2 white water rafting rivers in Bali: Ayung River and Telaga Waja.
Most people consider Ayung River more suitable for young kids. However, we did Telaga Waga when my son was 9yo and we felt safe. It is a great activity for the whole family. We loved it and we would definitely recommend it!
Duration: 1 - 2 ½ hour (rafting activity, without car ride - it takes about 30-60 from Ubud)
Length of rafting: 6-14 km
Price: Rp 500 000 - 1 000 000 per person (depends on river, length and provider)
Time: Book your slot in advance
When to go: Anytime
Mode of transportation: Most of the rafting companies will pick you up and drop off at your hotel
What to bring: Sport shoes or river sandals, swimming and a change of clothes, hat, sunscreen, extra money for souvenir/photo/tipping.
Children's age: 7-65 yo (If you are younger or older, please check with the provider! Ayung River has smaller waves and obstacles, thus suitable for kids from 5 years old. While older kids (from 8 years old) can try the Telaga Waja Rafting if they love more challenges.)

bali hidden canyon
This is a great and super fun adventure, but may not be for everyone.
We took kids 9, 11 and 14 and our friends families had teenagers and even younger ones with them, the youngest being 8 at the time. I would not recommend it for kids younger than that unless they are super skilled and not afraid. The teenagers had super fun!
You get to follow the river up through the beautifully carved out canyon, you will be climbing, scrambling, swimming and swinging as you go. The rocks can be slippery.
Choose the longest option which would take you through 3 canyons, the last one without water, and you will walk back through beautiful rice paddies and crops. The longest tour takes overall about 1,5 hour.
Do not be surprised by the number of guides that will accompany you because you will use their hands along the way! They are kind, helpful and speak english. They will become your personal photographers since you will not want to hold your phone in your hand!
There are lockers and dry bags available. At the end of the tour there is a nice surprise waiting for you - clean shower and towel provided and included in the price. You can have a coffee or tea or something to eat in the restaurant by the entrance.
The entry fee for local turists is IDR 75,000 / person, including guide, towel, water.
Call in advance to make sure the water is not high as they do not take visitors if it is.

Benoa Watersport
Paragliding, Banana Boat, Flying Donut, Sea Walker, Snorkeling, Jet Ski Ride and many more activities.
As we stayed close to Benoa (Grand Mirage Hotel on Nusa Dua), we walked (30 min) there and negotiated prices directly. The kids tried parasailing (good but 6 min only) and a banana boat and they were happy.
But definitely do not go to Turtle Island. Not only is it not worth the money and takes less than half of the “hour” that they say, but it is super depressing. Many people were also not happy with the glass bottom boat tour, as the water was muddy, and they couldn't see a lot.
The Seawalker Experience is available both in Sanur Beach and Tanjung Benoa. Your family will dive about 6-meter underwater using just a helmet with a pipe that connects you to an oxygen tank.
Provider: e.g. Bintang water sports (I don't remember which provider we used)

Cycling
Many people say that cycling around Ubud was one of their best experiences when visiting Bali. The tour operators have everything ready for your trip: bikes in good condition, helmets, waters, snacks, and delicious lunch at the end of the tour.
If you want to see the real, beautiful, cleaner Bali and how Balinese families live, this is a great opportunity.
They take you through the local roads and villages, rice paddies, small temples. You can visit wood carving workshops, local cafes, or even have a swim in the waterfall. The guides are knowledgable and great source of information about the local life.
Check with the operator what is their exact plan for the day so you will not be surprised.
Nowadays, many operators are also ready with the electronic bikes!
While Ubud is very popular for cycling, if you are staying in Canggu and still want to experience Bali on bicycle, it is definitely possible, too!
Rent a bicycle and study the map. So many small routes through the villages and rice fields! If you are heading from Canggu to Tanah Lot, you need to ride on the main road for a while so be extra cautious and watch for the cars and motorbikes. Later on, you will be rewarded by beautiful surroundings and places you would not see otherwise.
In Ubud, ask your hotel for recommendations, they usually cooperate with one of the bike tour operators.

Mount Batur Hike
.This is a hike you can do with kids. We did it with a bunch of 6, aged 8-13 years old. Some of them got tired along the way but they all made it and loved it.
We had two guides for a group of 10 people.
You will get tea/coffee and cookies before the hike and the hostel will prepare breakfast/brunch once you are back.
The hiking starts easily via a road alongside vegetables - onion, tomatoes, eggplant, chillies plantations. Half of the hike up is in the shadow, through the jungle, second half on the side of the hill, mostly rocks, open in the sun.
Once on the top, you take a break. Be careful as monkeys are around! We had a company of dogs walking with us all the way and these guys proved to be very useful at the top! The guides use sticks to keep the monkeys away.
The guides carry some simple snacks which they prepare here in a warung where you can also get coffee, tea, coke and even beer.
We walked around the beautiful crater and took an alternative way down on the other side of the mountain. The views are stunning. The walk around the crater is scary for parents but the kids loved it. Be very very careful here! The way down is sandy and you need to go slowly as you almost slide.
We stayed at an amazing little place, do not be put off by the word “hostel”. The rooms are clean, the views are stunning and an absolute highlight is their own hot pool!
The food is simple but very tasty and the guys will chat with you and even play guitar.

When to go: anytime, no need to go for sunrise and walk in the dark, for safety reasons, it is easy to start at 6.30-7. Hike up and down took us 5-6hrs. We would NOT recommend going after a rainfall.

kintamani (Mt. Batur area)
Cool fresh air and lower temperatures about 21 degrees are so pleasant in Kintamani, located in the mountainous area, in the caldera of Mt. Batur. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Mt. Batur and Lake Batur, while having lunch or just coffee in many of the available restaurants with terraces. Most of the people living here are farmers and you can buy fresh fruit and vegetable at many food stalls in the area. Kintamani is on your way to Ubud area or central Bali so you can easily make it a stop over during travelling.
WaterfallS
Bali has more than 20 waterfalls that fall in the category of “tourist attractions”. Some of them are very popular, easy to access and very touristy (you can still take a nice selfie, but all romance is gone with 100 people around), others are hidden, and you have to walk through the jungle to get to them.

Here are 4 examples of waterfalls that we liked:
SEKUMPUL WATERFALL
The best experience we have had visiting a waterfall! It is in north Bali, but worth a journey there. As you slowly hike up a simple staircase you can learn about plants along the way and enjoy the gorgeous views of all the three waterfalls once you reach the top. Returning, you can walk down to each waterfall and enjoy swimming or bathing in the fresh cool water! The nature around is so beautiful!
You need to have a guide, but you will get an official one once you pay the entrance fee.
Do not hire any guide anywhere earlier on the way.
Simple restaurant with tasty Indonesian food available inside the park.
Wear steady shoes for the hike.

GIGIT WATERFALL
Another scenic waterfall in North Bali, near Singaraja. And few kilometres from Ulun Dhanu Temple (temple of the lake). It takes about 10-15min from here to reach the waterfall, the route is beautiful, fresh and green.
Once you have arrived, you will need to initially walk down and then up steep stairs to reach the base of the waterfalls.
Again, you do not need to hire a guide, but a guide might be useful if you walk with small children. Always agree with the tip before starting your walk.
On the way down you will pass small shops selling souvenirs and the little kids will approach you, selling postcards.

Rice fields
We cannot imagine Bali without its rice paddies. It is those absolute stunning views and the green color that makes the island so special. Many visitors prefer to stay in Ubud or in the mountains and just enjoy the fresh air and peaceful beauty of the unforgettable rice terraces. We mention the most popular ones below, but if you travel around Bali, you will be surrounded by small rice fields everywhere.
The traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system known as the 'subak' is said to have been passed down by a revered holy man named Rsi Markandeya in the 8th century.

TEGALLALANG
Very close to Ubud, these rice terraces alone offer a scenic outlook that spreads down before you and away to the far side of the valley. The high location close by the road is cool and breezy and it is a well known spot for tourists to stop and take photos.
Also painters and nature lovers enjoy visiting this spot, there are numerous art kiosks and cafés along the road overlooking the terraces. You can take a walk through the fields or you can just sit in one or the pleasant cafes with good coffee or fresh coconut and enjoy the fantastic views.

JATILUWIH
UNESCO heritage. The Jatiluwih rice terraces in upland village in West Bali are most famous for their dramatic and exotic landscapes. The cool highlands and the breathtaking scenery of this village at the foot of Mount Batukaru makes for wonderful photo opportunities.
These terraces are bit far from the Bali's main attractions but if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful surroundings, this is a must visit place. Have a lunch at one of the restaurants (Gong restaurant by the parking lot is our tip) overlooking the terraces with worlds-class views.
You can decide to go for a walk, starting on a concrete path and continuing on a steady path through the fields. You can choose how far to go based on your strength.
The weather here is cool and air is fresh, but it is alway best to go in the morning before the sun is high. There are many water canals along the way, quite intricate field water system with clear water, where you can cool your tired feet or just wet your hair.
Address: Jalan Jatiluwih, Penebel, Tabanan, Bali 82152. Inside the area, park by the Gong restaurant, opposite the POS Informasi (information booth). The walk starts right by the information booth.
Open: Daily 8.30am - 6pm
Entrance ticket to the Jatiluwih area: 40.000rp/person

Campuhan Ridge Walk
This walk is a must if you are staying or even only passing Ubud! It is a short 2km, 45 min walk each way (or 30 min if you walk faster). Best if you do the walk in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid the heat. In the pandemic times the walk is not crowded, we have met only few local expats jogging here. Once you reach the end of the ridge path keep walking straight through the cozy village of Bangkiang Sidem with cafes, warungs, painting and craft shops (not all of them are open at the moment). At the end of the walk you come to Karsa Kafe. You can have a drink and enjoy fantastic views on rice terraces here or even better if you continue further and turn directly to the rice field to visit new places such as Bamboo cafe. If you have already fallen in love with the area, and you eyes still cannot get enough of the green beauty, ask for the nearest homestay!
Directions: 10-15min walk from down the Jalan Ubud Raya (with Ubud Water Palace on your right side), keep walking along the narrow path under the bridge. Find the Warwick Ibah Willas&Spa sign. There’s a narrow downhill stone path leading to the stairs going up the ridge. Is it well signed, you can ask around or even the Google map will guide you. At the beginning of the walk you will pass an amazing temple on your left side. You will step up few steps and walk on the wide path meeting people.

Coffee tasting – Bali Pulina
The tasting is not only coffee but also tea, so it is a nice short activity for the whole family. Our kids loved it! There are many coffee tasting places in Bali, but we recommend Bali Pulina because of its beautiful view and professionalism. The experience includes a 10 minutes walk through a “garden” with various plants (coffee, chocolate, papaya, ….), luwak animals and an explanation of traditional processes of coffee making. Very interesting for foreigners!
At the end we got about 10 tiny cups per table of various coffees and teas (for free). You can order more drinks or snacks if you want (paid).
We bought some of their products in the store that is located by the exit, but this is not compulsory.
Duration: 1 hour

Ceremonies
It seems like in Bali there is a ceremony every day. They are part of life of the balinese people without further thinking about it. If there is no ceremony on that day, you will at least see streets decorated from the last one or the coming one. Offerings are made daily and you will see them everywhere. You will also always see people preparing the decorations or offerings somewhere around. Be careful where you put your steps as the tiny offerings are often placed in front of entrances, on the streets, paths.. If you are interested in attending a ceremony such as wedding or funeral, talk to your local guide, or a driver, they would be able to arrange that for you.

In March 2021 we visited Pod Chocolate Factory and café close to Ubud and participated in a chocolate-making workshop. We were the only visitors, but in normal times they have 25 visitors per day. The shop assistant showed us the factory, where they produce 1 ton of chocolate every day and explained the process of chocolate making from cocoa trees to packaging. We could see the machines and try pure dried choco beans.
The shop offers free chocolate tasting of about 30 different flavors.
For a fresh chocolate-making workshop, you can choose from 4 flavors of chocolate (white, milk 33%, dark 64%, dark 80%) and 2 out of 12 ingredients (almonds, rosella, cranberry, rice crisps, choco nibs, coffee beans, gummy bears, etc).
We booked the workshop one day before going there.
Duration: 5-10 min for the tour, 20 min for the workshop, 20 min chocolate tasting and shopping :)
Open: 9 am - 5 pm (please confirm before going)
Price: Free entrance, Rp.100 000 for fresh chocolate-making workshop per person
Children age: from 5 years old for the workshop
Where: Jalan Denpasar-Singaraja No.29, Mengwi, Bali (POD has also a shop in Sanur, but that is a shop only, no workshop offered)
Phone: +62 361 209 1011

Pondok Pekak Library (Ubud)
This small simple library in the centre of Ubud is a bit tricky to find. Nothing luxurious.
My daughter took an 1 hour class of watermelon carving here. She was the only student. The teacher was very kind and guided her during the whole process. We would highly recommend this place to anyone with kids (or not) looking to fill an hour or two.
Classes: Fruit carving, woodcarving, silver making, Bahasa Indonesia, gamelan playing, Balinese dancing, etc.
Duration: 1 - 3 hours (depends on class you choose: 1 hour for watermelon carving, 3h for silver making or painting)
Price: Rp 150 000 - 300 000 (depends on class you choose: Rp 150 000 for watermelon carving, Rp 300 000 for silver making or painting)

When to go: There is no schedule - just choose a class and a time and they will get the instructor in. Bookings can be made on the same day, but they need at least 2 hours advanced notice and a 50% deposit.
Mode of transportation: If you are staying in Ubud, you can just walk there
What to bring: If you are taking a painting class, bring some ideas of what you want to paint :-)

Silver making / Silver Factory
Class
One of the fun activities to do in Bali is to create a beautiful custom made piece of silver jewellery. This activity is more for adults than for children (maybe for teenagers). There are various places offering silver classes (e.g. Pondok Pekak Library in Ubud mentioned above).
Factory and shop
If you don't intend to take a silver-making class but you would like to see how silver jewellery is made, you can visit a small silver factory in Celuk village, with children. Celuk village is the silver place in Bali, but if it is not on your way, there are many silver factories in Bali, just ask your driver to stop at one.
We have visited Angel to Angel store and factory and it was probably the most beautiful silver store I have ever seen. It looked inside like an ice castle. Even our kids were amazed. However, if you're intending to buy silver for good price, better go somewhere else, e.g. Ubud art market. This is just for tourists.
Angel to Angel store and factory:
Duration: 15 min (+shopping time)
Price: Overpriced! Store let us browse at our leisure and we never felt pressured to make a purchase.
Time: 8am - 7pm
When to go: anytime
Mode of transportation: We stopped here on the way by taxi from the airport to Ubud.
Children age to visit Angel and Angel: probably at least 10 yo, otherwise I would be afraid that they might break something
Where: Angel to Angel, Jl. Raya Celuk, Batubulan, Kec. Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80582
Contact: +62361295999
Email: [email protected]
Webpage: http://angeltoangelsilver.com/
Lunch: Place is close to family friendly restaurant Warung Tepi Tebing
Other attractions nearby: MAS village (woodcarving), Bird Park

Woodcarving
This activity is more for adults than for children (maybe for teenagers).
MAS village is THE woodcarving place on Bali, but there are many more places offering woodcarving classes (e.g. Pondok Pekak Library in Ubud above)
However, you can still visit a small woodcarving factory in MAS village with children.
We visited MAS village and the woodcarver in front of the store let our kids try it for 10 minutes, which was sufficient for them to realize how difficult it is :-)

There is a massage salon on every corner of Bali. Your hotel will have a spa probably. Consider going there with your children too :-)
If you are looking for a healing massage, you might try MAAPUN Life Shiva Energy Healing Massage in Ubud. Our friends that live in Canguu travel every weekend to Ubud just to get this massage.

TEMPLES
Bali has fascinating culture including its sacred Hindu temples. The temples are one of the most interesting and important places to visit on this island.
They have remained pure and unspoilt, worshipped with daily colourful offerings to the Gods by Bali’s beautiful people.
Below find few words about the temples we recommend to visit.
There are of course many others and you will not be disappointed when visiting smaller and rather hidden ones.

Pura Lempuyang
East Bali. “Gateway to Heaven”, the view from this temple is divine. Ideally plan a visit on a clear day, as Mount Agung is framed perfectly by the temples’ gates. Absolutely Instagrammable! However, be prepared that you might wait in a queue to take the perfect picture. There are six other temples to explore nearby, plus waterfalls and gorgeous rice terraces.

Ulun Danu
Central Bali. One of the most photographed temples in Bali, thanks to its magical location in the middle of Lake Beratan. This temple is high up in Bali’s central highlands, so bring an extra layer of clothing as the climate can get quite cool.

Uluwatu
South Bali. Bali’s most breathtaking temple with its ocean backdrop, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is located high above the clifftops teetering above crashing waves below. An important sacred temple built for the spirits of the sea. You will not be able to visit all parts of the temple. Rather take a walk along both sides of the cliff and enjoy the stunning views.
Also known as the Monkey Temple! Try and time your visit to catch the traditional Kecak dance of 100 chanting men, held every evening at sunset.

Northeastern Bali. The former royal palace of Tirtagangga (water of the Ganges, Hinduism's holy river in India) features fountains, gardens, and stone sculptures of mythical creatures spouting water into bathing pools. Just outside the palace grounds, the views of the lush rice paddies are stunning. Your kids will love this beautiful site, they can jump on the round tiles in the waters and feed the already well fed fish!

Goa Lawah
Central Bali, near Ubud. This cave temple is home to thousands of bats, but if local legend is to be believed, it also hides a river of healing waters and a titanic snake wearing a crown.

Batur Hot springs
Batur hot springs are 2hrs ride from airport. I would not recommend to make it just as a day trip but if you plan to stay in the area, it is worth to visit, especially for the absolutely amazing views. Imagine enjoying the hot pool while looking at beautiful lake Batur and the mountains of Mt. Batur! Sometimes you can watch the elderly fishermen on their dugout canoe fishing with their old traditional net.
There is about 7 pools in some the water is hot, is some warm - more suitable for the kids. The pools are man made but the water is from natural source since Mt. Batur is a volcano. They provide towels and a welcome drink. I have heard both kind of experience - good for the actual attraction and views, and bad for the cleanse of the changing rooms.
(Just mind the signs on the road and do not mix the Batur Hot Springs with the next door "Toya Devasya" (a big purple commercial.)
If you prefer private hot spring pool with great view, read our article about Mt. Batur and visit Hot Lava Hostel with their private hot pool.
Do not forget to bring KITAS for better price. Locker is available here.
Open: everyday 7am - 7pm
Price: 190.000rp/person

5. NUSA PENIDA
and
NUSA LEMBONGAN
Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida is an island next to Bali and is a huge rock sticking up from the sea. It is a very instagrammable place, but most of the beaches are too dangerous to swim off because the waves are too strong. You have to climb MANY steps down and don’t forget that you have to climb them all up!!!
We stayed on Nusa Penida for 2 nights because we thought that our hotel would be directly on a beach, but it wasn't (Pandawa Beach Resort).
Most people come here just for a 1 day trip from Bali, which I think is sufficient. Be prepared for a lot of sitting in the car (roads are horrible!) and taking many beautiful pictures!
Nusa Penida is also known for diving but the currents are strong here and it is only recommended for the experienced divers.

Best places to visit on Nusa Penida:
Kelingking Beach - the highlight of the island. You should attempt going down to the beach only if you are physically fit as going up will test your endurance at an extreme level!
Expect many tourists taking selfies.
Broken Beach - actually not a beach, just another beautiful place for taking pictures. Not possible to swim.
Crystal Bay Beach - one of the few beaches on Nusa Penida where you can swim and enjoy your day. Many visitors stay at one of many crystal bay accommodations.

We paid about Rp 800 000 for a car with driver for the whole day on Nusa Penida (provided by Pandawa Beach Resort) You can also get to Nusa Penida from Padangbai. For more info about touristic destinations in Nusa Penida please read this well written article: https://liburanbali.net/en/nusa-penida/ |
NUSA LEMBONGAN
Nusa Lembongan is a very pleasant, quiet and laid back place. You can hire motorbike or a car to explore the island. Since cycling is lately very popular, you can surely find a bicycle rental shop. Many small restaurants and shops are located along the main but still small road in the main village of Jungunbatu. There are also some nice Yoga studios.
The longest and most beautiful beach is also called Jungunbatu, and it is a long strip of white sand along the west coast of the island with awesome views of Mt. Agung.
There are many accommodations and many restaurants along the beach. It is a very convenient place to stay at. You can go swimming in the blue waters and if the waves are too big, just relax in the pool of you resort with the sea view. There are no big hotels here. Your ferry will arrive here, to the very left side of the beach, if coming by boat from Bali harbor of Sanur.
You can take a trip to Mushroom beach and visit one of its many great restaurants, travel via Yellow bridge to the smaller island of Ceningan with its famous Blue Lagoon where the water is the bluest you can ever imagine and a spend a day here having lunch and enjoying the beach.
Visit the Devils tears, as many say this is the highlight of Nusa Lembongan, a rock where you can watch (from a far distance, I recommend) the water coming through the rock and making a huge fountain. Nearby Dream beach is amazing place to spend the afternoon with fresh coconut or a beer from many of the local restaurants.
Mangrove Forest Nusa Lembongan, just at the right top of Jungubatu beach - you can hire a small paddle or motor boat that takes you to the mangroves and along the villages on the shores. It is a really nice experience and easy to do with children of any age.
Nusa Penida is just round the corner and a boat can take you there in 1-2 hours. Usually for diving and snorkeling but make sure you do not bring small kids here as it is not recommended for beginner divers. (Currents, waves, rocky shore.)

6. Where to Eat
There are so many amazing restaurants in Bali! On the popular beaches or in Ubud the choices are endless.
massimo Italian restaurant - Sanur
Massimo is probably one of the best Italians restaurants we have ever been. The food is delicious. It is famous for its ice cream. The prices are very affordable.
KU DE TA - Semyniak
Ku De Ta is a cool palace, great international food (we loved the pizzas, pastas and veggyburgers), drinks, musik and beach.
In Semyniak we also enjoyed Sisterfields Cafe (ideal for breakfast), Mykonos Greek Restaurant and Lacalaca Cantina Mexicana and Warung Souvlaki (direction Kuta, increadibly good prices for the delicious food).
Finns - Canggu
Finns Beach Club is more of a cool bar than a restaurant (even food was also very good). Nor really for kids, but it might be an option if you have older teenages. It's huge.
Bali collection - Nusa Dua
There are not many restaurants in Nusa Dua and you often finisg eating in your hotel (or order food via GoJek). Bali collection is a open mall with about 20-30 good restaurants. We liked an Indian restaurant The Royal Kitchen Bali (sorry, I forgot to take pictures).
Zest Ubud
An organic restaurant in Ubud with all the ingredients sourced locally. Good ambience, cozy and relaxed place to sit. Amazing vegan food. Full of flavours and all ingredients are fresh.
Warung Tepi Tebing
You can consider eating in this restaurant if it is on your way (I wouldn't come here just because of the restaurant). We stopped here on the way from the airport to Ubud. You sit in huts and the kids can feed fish while waiting for food so the atmosphere is very pleasant for children (and adults). The food is good but nothing extraordinary (Indonesian and International, kids ate it). It is the ambient that makes it nice.
Some attractions are around, e.g. Bird Park, Zoo, ...

7. Where to Sleep
Bali is a touristic paradise with hotels for any taste and for any price range. The relation price/quality is excellent.
We usually book via:
www.booking.com
www.agoda.com
www.airbnb.com
Just read the reviews on Booking. com and if your hotel has an excellent rating (8.5+) and good latest reviews, then you will probably by happy with your hotel. We have tried about 10 hotel over the years form airbnb home stay in Ubud to luxury Intercontinental in Jimbaran and we were always delighted.
If you plan to spend your vacation on beach, carefully choose which beach (see section Beaches) and check if your hotel is situated directly on the beach (if it is important for you).
To get a better price, you might want to try to call hotel directly.
