2. The Playground (kemang)

 4. Ragunan ZOO

Ragunan Zoo is located in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. Therefore it is easily accessible!
Ragunan ZOO
Ragunan ZOO, South Jakarta
It is probably not the most amazing Zoo you have ever visited and instead would recommend a to visit the wonderful Taman Safari near Bogor if you want to observe animals.

I would rather recommend it as a park / large outdoor space to walk under the trees. You can bring a bike or scooter (which you might need to carry sometimes). Or you can rent a bike there.

It is actually fun to take the little kids on the Swan boat ride on the lake.

Sunday morning is popular for people wanting to do exercise, like running and already mentioned walking or cycling around the zoo.
In general, if going with kids, try to get there early in the morning and on a weekday preferably. It is less hot and there are less people. It gets very busy on weekends and Indonesians love to take picnics in the grounds here. There are lots of food stalls with Indonesian food so take your own snack if you prefer.   There are also many non-food stalls selling smaller goods, almost like a market!

Open: 7.30am
Price: Rp 5000/adult, Rp 3000/child, Rp 6000/car parking, Rp 1000/bicycle and some additional small charges for entering the Primate centre, Children Zoo area, Swan boat, Horse ride etc.

 5. Biking

1. Gelora Bung Karno Stadium is an option for bicycle with children (unfortunately during PSBB children <9 yo were not allowed to enter, so double check, before going there)

2. Biking in BSD. Park your car at the Mozia, in front of Bike Guru shop, near cafe Kopi&Beignet. You can ride the small loop, 2,5km even with the kids! You can do a large loop or after coming here for few times, you can explore the side streets by yourself. This area is green with many large wide streets that are in a shadow, under the umbrella of trees. Or you ride along beautiful golf course with large lake. Still, some parts you have to go on the main roads so always be extra cautious!

The bicycle path in Alam Sutera (close to Ikea) housing estate is perfect for those of you who are beginners because of the smoothe road terrain with beautiful views of the trees and because it is shady. The track for cycling in Alam Sutera is quite quiet, spacious and clean. Come to rest to Flavor Bliss, which has many places to eat and coffee shops, one of which is Starbucks.

3. Bintaro loop - find the British School of Jakarta on the map and come to this area on Sunday morning when the large road is closed in both directions and you can do as many loops as you wish. One loop is 10 km. You will meet a lot of recreational and professional bikers. Great training start for getting back to your biking routine!

4. As for adults, biking, especially on Saturday and Sunday morning, is very popular in Jakarta. On Jl Surdiman (central Jakarta) are more fast speed bikers than cars on Saturdays at 6am.
Another favourite destination is Sentul (groups meet early morning at Citos mall and ride to Sentul via Depok).
There are many groups that bike together, you just have to find the one that match your speed.
App STRAVA is popular between sport fans. You can find good ideas where to bike in and around Jakarta.

There are about 20 golf courses in and surrounding Jakarta, so golf is not considered such an exclusive sport as in Europe.
If you don't play golf, Indonesia is a great place to start! Golf courses offer lessons for adults and children.

9. Widayanto Ceramic House (DEPOK)

My artistic daughter and I spent 2 beautiful Saturday mornings here - one to make the ceramics and 2 weeks later we returned to paint them.
Widayanto is a famous Indonesian ceramic artist and the Widayanto Ceramic House in Depok (Rumah Keramik F Widayanto) is located in  a complex of houses surrounded by a lush, tropical garden. Ceramic works are cleverly embedded into the local surroundings making it an incredible place to visit, especially if you enjoy nature.
Picture
It took us about 1 hour to get there from Jakarta. It is hard to find, so be patient and definitely print out the address to show the locals who will point you, eventually, in the right direction.
When you enter, you are greeted by lovely greenery and peaceful surroundings. This place is much more then just a ceramic house and is a huge contrast to the narrow streets outside.
We didn't book a workshop in advance, but maybe it would be a good idea to do so. You can decide what kind of workshop you want to do - to make ceramics (and an artist will fire it and paint your creation for you) or to paint a pre-fired piece. We decided to do both (you have to come 2 times) and we even took a workshop on how to use the pottery wheel.
You don't need any special skills to be able to do it as  you are guided by a ceramic artist who helps to make your pieces more beautiful. You can use templates (leaves, butterfly .... as on the picture) or you can make something entirely new.
On finishing your piece, you have to leave your artwork for firing (each piece needs to be put in the kiln twice - once after you create a piece and then after coloring it). Finished pieces were sent by Gojek to our home  2-3 weeks later.
You can also enjoy some local cuisine here, but we didn't try it. There is also a small shop with souvenirs.
Picture
Picture
Duration: about 1-2 hour for a workshop
Price: Rp 10 000 entrance fee and Rp 140 000 - 300 000 workshop fee. If you want your art pieces to be delivered to you, you need to pay extra Rp 100 000
Mode of transportation: arriving/departing by own vehicle (you can park in front of the house)
What to bring: The workshop is conducted outside, so it might be hot. High heels are not recommended, water, snacks,  mosquito spray, camera are!
Children age: suitable for all ages
Where: Rumah Keramik F Widayanto, Jl. Curug Agung No. 1 Tanah Baru Beji Depok 16428 (F. Widayanto, apparently has 3 outlets, so make sure you know which one you want to visit. We went to Depok)

11. Car Free Sunday in Central Jakarta

Not happening in pandemic time - otherwise every Sunday morning the street in central Jakarta (Senayan, Sudirman, Thamrin and Monas areas) are closed to cars and motorcycles.  You can push yourself to get a great workout or simply socialize while walking at a comfortable pace. Same applies for large loop in Bintaro, Tangerang, close to British school of Jakarta.

12. Kayaking in Ancol Bay

This is a relatively new activity, opened in 2020 or 2021.
Our friends went kayaking on a Sunday morning with their 3 kids (7-15yo). They had to be at 7 am in Ancol bay at Gor Bahtera Jaya. First, they had safety instructions. From 8 am they were kayaking for about 1 hour to the nearby island (actually the protection of the Ancol bay), they were provided with a tasty snack there, and kayaked back. Finished at 11:30 am.
There were about 20 people in total.
Kayaks and safety vests are new and in very good condition.
The water is as it would be expected to be around Jakarta, but the kayaks are wide, so it is difficult to flip around. As our friend said to their kids "if you flip and water doesn't kill you, then I will". Anyway, some teenagers jumped into the water at the beach oposit the Ancol Bay and they are still alive and healthy.
The activities and prices vary every day (e.g. sometimes they offer sunset kayaking, or kayaking on one of the 1000 Islands) so better check their program on instagram and book in advance.
Perfect activity during pandemic!

8. Lotus painting

Himapan Lotus Painting, a great activity for adults and teenagers. However, our friend took her 7yo daughter and she enjoyed it a lot. Actually, kids love the activity, the issue is just the price (relatively expensive) and time (small kids are finished in 20 min, while you need 1-2 hour). See more suggestions in the Children's Age section below.
You need to have an advanced booking, decide which canvas size you want, and make a down payment.
The workshop takes place in a modern house in BSD. The atmosphere is very pleasant, everything is clean. There is a corner with coffee, tea, and snacks.
Everyone will get a "raw canvas" of the size that they ordered (see pictures below of brownish raw canvases). The leaves are already glued on the canvas. You will just paint them.
First, the owner will explain to you the painting technique and give you an extra canvas to try it. All needed painting materials are provided. You can choose between water, acrylic, or oil colors. Then you have 2 hours to paint it.  No rushing. It is fun and relaxing. Actually, the time depends on the size of your canvas. It can last 3 or 4 hours for bigger paintings.
Participants do not need to be an experienced artist, absolutely no experience is required, anyone can paint, you just need to select the colors of your choice and needs.  With the coaching and personal guidance, each canvas will turn into a masterpiece :)
You cannot take your finished painting home immediately, as it has to dry and has to be varnished first. You can choose between Glossy, Matt, or Semi-Gloss varnish. It will be delivered to your home in 1-2 weeks.
You can find Himapan Lotus Painting in few other countries. It comes originally from Bangkok.
Himapan lotus painting
Himapan lotus painting, Jakarta
Duration: 2 hour for smallest size
Children age:
I would say it is more for adults and 10+yo kids. Our teenagers loved it! However, our friend took her 7yo daughter and she had a lot of fun too! The issue is that it is relatively expensive (900 000 per small full canvas) and children are finished in 20 min. If you want to go with smaller children, you might opt for a single leave canvas (300 000 per canvas) as the family with 4 girls (6-12yo) on the last picture.
Open:  depends on time that you book
Min group: Probably 4 pax, but please check (it might depends on total cash amount than on nr of persons)
Max group: 10 pax
Price: Full leaves canvas from Rp 900 000 per picture (40x40 cm) up to  2.7 mio+ (5 or more leaves on canvas. As on the most of the pictures above)
One leave on the canvas Rp 300 000 (Only one symple leave in the middle of the canvas. See picture of the family on the last picture)

17. Kite Museum

Museum Layang-layang Indonesia
Very pleasant place, traditional Javanese half opened house in a green garden, with many interesting Layangs displayed. At the end you can join a little workshop to make your own kite! There are other interesting workshops available on your request, see the picture below!
Here is a feedback from an expat mom thet has been there in 2019:
"It's actually located in the residential area of South Jakarta just after Fatmawati hospital.
It doesn't look like a Museum, as its actually a resident house with open space and veranda converted to display kites. So no high expectations here.
Most of the times it's empty.
I had gone twice and there were just 3-4 more visitors other than me and my son.
- There are 3-4 caretakers/ guide/ support staff in the premises, who run the show.
- There is a decent Collection of kites from around the world on display.
- Small money is taken as entry fee.
- Then they make you see a documentary first on kites which is very informative.
-1 person is allocated as your guide and later same person involves the child to make a kite of their own after the tour, which is interesting and good activity for kids.
- overall it takes 1 hr to 1.5hr in total to spend in there.
- there is a small counter for drink and small bites too.
- I really recommend kids to visit this place, as it's a good way to know history of kites.
Since this place doesn't get too much visitors,it should be safe to visit during Covid."

19. Ice skating in BX Rink - Bintaro Jaya Xchange Mall

CLOSED IN THE PANDEMIC
Feeling of winter in a tropical country!
You can lend the skates here, all sizes available. Wear good long socks and warm clothes (jumper and long pants (Leggins). Gloves are very useful if you fall down! (You can buy socks and gloves here.) Lockers available for deposit.
You can hire a trainer (book in advance) which might be very useful if you are a beginner. For your little one, lend a "penguin" to help him move around.

The best time to go is Sunday morning, right at the opening time 10am. The ring is usually empty and the ice is good. Later during the day the ice gets watery. You may experience cleaning the ice once in a few hours.
You will see some "professional" ice skaters or occasionally even a hockey practice.
The music is played so it makes the atmosphere and it is really fun place to go with friends.
The kids can easily rest on the benches if they get tired or have a cup of hot chocolate to keep them warm and energized!

We had an ice skating birthday party once!!! Parents watched from the top level cafe.

24. Glodok China town and sunda kelapa Harbour

This "attraction" is more for adults than for children. It is rather a trip for your dad or uncle who will appreciate stories about the Pinisi boats (UNESCO heritage) and the Bugis sailors who navigate them only by the stars to the coasts of Kalimantan or Sulawesi!
Sometimes you may see the manual loading. If you are lucky, visit the boat!

Enter the building, walk through a courtyard passing the Magic Art 3D Museum (magicartkotatua.com) to a European style passage!
Take a seat at the bar, choose your preferable Jamu drink from the menu and watch its preparation.
Jamu classes for public (group of 15 people max) are ran in the upstairs area - unfortunately not at the moment.
Next door ,you will find Acaraki healthy foods shop!
If you are lucky enough to meet the owner here, Jony Yuwono, he can explain everything about Jamu, why did he open the shop and the journey of how he brings the fresh herbs from the farms in Sukabumi to your table in Jakarta.

29. Bead Lady

Ibu Yekti is a bead artist that sources recycled materials and converts them into beautiful beads. Her glass beads are inspired by Murano beads. Some people donate to her old wine bottles so that she can recycle them in her own small factory in Middle Java.
As you enter her Javanes house in South Jakarta you feel as you have been transported to the land of beads. The colors, the textures, the patterns are overwhelmingly beautiful.
Ibu Yekti can help you to create a wonderful necklace or key chain. You can even bring over your evening dress or scarf and ask her to make something that harmonizes with it.
Ask for the special beads (large pieces African style).
Ibu Yekti is a sweet person and has a life experience. For sure very interesting lady to meet.
Tips:
-Make sure you make an appointment with her before you visit her home. You are welcome to visit when she isn’t there but trust me, you will want her creative genius to accompany your jewelry creating process.
-Bring cash to pay for your jewelry.
-Beware that the Javanese style house is very tropical in nature so it can get quite warm. There is water available but don’t dress as if you are going to a frigid Jakarta mall.
-Bring your kids! Even little boys might be into making a keychain to hang from their backpack. There are tons of child friendly beads and very cute glass creations.
-Come right before Christmas or your holiday back home and make personalized gifts for your loved ones!
