Petrified Wood In Indonesia
Looks like wood, feels like stone
When you look at petrified wood, you're looking at a long-dead tree that was turned to stone and yet still retained its basic structure. Petrified wood is a fossil of an ancient tree.
When an organism dies, it usually decomposes. However once in a while, a newly-deceased tree gets rapidly buried by mud, silt, or volcanic ash, which doesn’t let oxygen get to the tree. Lack of oxygen causes the plant to decompose far more slowly than it normally would.
Meanwhile, mineral-laden water or mud seeps into the dead tree's pores and other openings. Over a few million years, those minerals will crystalize. The result is a rock that appropriates the shape and structure of our original tree.

Is petrified wood valuable?
The value of petrified wood depends on weight, color, quality, and whether it is polished or not. Worked out wood (statues) are more expensive.
In the factory that we visited (Petrified Wood Indonesia, 90 min from Jakarta) the prices were between Rp 15 000 – 50 000 per kg (don’t forget that pieces are rather heavy).
In Kemang store (Jakarta) you pay for the convenience, so the prices are 3x more expensive than in the factory, but still very reasonable (coaster Rp 75 000, candle holder Rp 200 000, bowl Rp 1.8 mio, bookend small size Rp 200 000, bookend medium size Rp 300 000)
How long does it take for wood to petrify?
Most of the petrified wood is millions of years old.
The Gilboa fossil forest (USA) is 385 million years old and is generally referred to as 'the oldest fossil forest'. The youngest petrified wood was created by scientists in ideal conditions in tenths of years.
What is the average age of petrified wood in Indonesia?
Indonesia's largest deposits of petrified wood come mainly from drastic volcanic activity and flooding around 20 million years ago.
Where is Petrified Wood Found in Indonesia?
Indonesia’s petrified wood is coming mainly from West Java from areas like Banten and Mount Halimun Salak National Park.
What is petrified wood good for?
It is mostly used for ornamental objects and decorative pieces (tabletops, ashtrays, bookends), furniture pieces (stools, tables, side tables, sinks) and less frequently for jewelry purposes.
Is petrified wood considered a gem?
Though rock-hard and jewel-like when polished, petrified wood is actually a fossil, not a gemstone.
Is it illegal to have petrified wood?
It is not illegal to possess petrified wood. However, in some countries (e.g. USA) most petrified wood is present in National Parks, and removing anything from a National Park is illegal.
Why do the colors vary?
The color of petrified wood is determined by the specific minerals and elements that have replaced the tree’s composition during petrification.
