Why you should visit the City of Bandung
Why you should visit the area around Bandung
Bandung city is very popular destination for Indonesians. As for foreigners, most of my expat friends have never visited the city, but many of them, including my family, have spent a few pleasant cool days in the recreational area of Northern Bandung, especially to hike/drive to volcano crater Tangkuban Parahu or challenge themselves at the Top Tree Adventure Park.
- Fresh air
- Parijs van Java (Paris from Java)
- UNESCO Creative city – music, design, exhibitions, ….
- Factory outlets (FOs)
- Food

1. The City Of Bandung
Parijs van Java (Paris from Java)
Bandung is known as Parijs van Java (Paris from Java) as some of its historical buildings and streets have European look and you can feel and take picture like you were in Paris. Well, at least when you look at it from Asian perspective.

UNESCO Creative city
The city of Bandung is considered as creative city. It is one of the 246 cities which currently make up UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). It is an innovative hub for creativity and entrepreneurship. With many initiatives driven by the city’s young demographic, Bandung hosts a variety of workshops, conferences and festivals, all encouraging the development of creativity, prototypes and product design. In fact, 56% of Bandung's economic activities are design-related, with fashion, graphic design and digital media being the top three sub-sectors in the local creative economy.

Factory outlets (FOs)
The region is one of Indonesia’s largest manufactures of clothing with many big international brands. Bandung is the place where you can find affordable designer wear as tons of samples and surplus merchandise ends up in the factory outlets located around town.
Jakartans, Singaporeans and Malaysians, regularly go shopping to Bandung , but it’s also a great spot for Westerners as the outlets tend to have larger sizes than you’ll find in ordinary Indonesian malls.
However, today you can find various FOs brands in Jakarta or Bogor (e.g. Heritage, Brasco, Raja FO).

Romantic city
Because of the mountains, trees, fresh air, cute cafes, Bandung is perceived by Indonesian as a romantic place. There is even a movie and novel “From Bandung with love”.

Music
Typical Sundanese music instrument is angklung. However, its music does not have to be only traditional one, it can be something modern, like this amazing performance of "Mission Impossible" by Saung Angklung Udjo |

Historic city
This beautiful area has a bit sad history as until 1955 most of the Sundanese people were not allowed to enter here.
Braga street – European style street, not too narrow, not too wide.
Praga Permai is one of the oldest restaurants in Bandung.
De Majestic is a movie theater from 1925 currently used for various cultural events & performances.
Asia Africa Street with Gedung Merdeka (Independence Building) where in 1955 took place the first large-scale Asian–African Conference, a meeting of Asian and African states, most of which were newly independent.
Alun Alun Bandung (Bandung Square) is a big green area of about 1,200 m2 covered with synthetic grass. The square has facilities such as a children's playground, library, and a WiFi network. It is a very popular place mainly during Ramadan, when people get together for Ngabuburit. (Many activities take place to celebrate Ramadhan. The Sundanese people in Bandung often go out before dusk with friends or family to welcome the moment of buka puasa, which means breaking the fast. They call it ngabuburit. Usually, places become public spots like Gasibu Field and Tugu Perjuangan in front of Gedung Sate or in a wide yard of Tugu Pahlawan Cikutra. In Gasibu Field, people play evening sports such as foot ball, jogging, biking, or even skateboarding without worrying of getting tired because of fasting. While in Tugu Pahlawan, lots of children play with mercon, small fireworks that create specific sounds.)
Masjid Raya Bandung (Grand Mosque of Bandung) is a bid smaller version of the impressive Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta.

Food
For Indonesian it is popular in Bandung to take 1 day food tasting tour of traditional food or modern fusion food.
It is often used a banana leave as an ecological substitution of plate as it is waterproof and it gives nice aroma to the food. Sundanese people eat a lot of raw vegetables. Traditional dish is Nasi Liwet and Awung desert. Modern dish is Seblak (super spicy soup with various ingredients like pasta, fish balls, crackers etc). You can ask the cook a level of spicenes of 1-100 chillies. Young people and bloggers like to challenge themselves how spicy they can eat.

2. North of Bandung
Tangkuban Parahu
If you have never seen a volcano and you are staying in Jakarta, then you have to come to see it. I find this as the best attraction in Bandung area. Check that the volcano is not erupting before going there!
Tangkuban Parahu is semi-dormant volcano that rim you can reach by car, what makes it a very popular attraction for people that don't like to walk. However, you can do it like us and have a nice 1-2 hour hike in a beautiful scenery.
There are about main 3 attractions for you to visit:
1) Kawah Domas (Domas Crater) - hot springs crater with spots where you can dip your feet
2) Kawah Ratu (Queen Crater) - the largest crater of Tangkuban Perahu is the main attraction
3) Kawah Upas
4) Kawah Baru - not allowed to visit
In total there are about 9 craters at Tangkuban Parahu, but some of them are prohibited to visit due to dangerous sulfur gas. The yellow walls of the crater are a measure of the toxicity of the crater area and should not be visited.
1) Kawah Domas (Domas Crater)
Although Kawah Domas is not as famous as Kawah Ratu, you can enjoy more fun activities here: spots where you can dip your feet, receive a mud bath massage, or even buy eggs boiled right in the hot springs themselves as a snack.
While Kawah Ratu rim can be reached by car, you need an extra effort to visit Kawah Domas. There are 2 roads leading to Kawah Domas, namely a) from the up, from the main park called Kawah Ratu Park or b) from the halfway to the main crater, from the Domas Crater Park. If you are physically limited, then I would suggest to choose access from the Domas Crater Park, which is a relatively flat with a slightly steep incline right before the crater area and with a distance of only about 1200 meters.
Path from Kawah Ratu park is rather steep. Be wary of taking this trail if it’s been raining lately or if you are not up for some cardio and a trail that is hard on your knees. Remember that, while the path runs down, you will have to climb back up to leave (if you don't have your driver)!
As we like to hike and we have our driver with us, we made a loop. We asked our driver to leave us at the Domas Crater Park and pick us up at Kawah Ratu Park. This was the best part of our trip. Beautiful nature. No tourists.
Again, you will need to hire a guide, even it is absolutely not necessary, but you have to. Before proceeding with the payment communicate clearly which trek you want to go, as he might want to have extra payment if you want to hike from Kawah Domas to Kawah Ratu.
You can easily tell when you have reached Kawah Domas, due to the strong smell of sulphur. It is 10x stronger than Kawah Ratu. Regardless of the smell, it is possible to take pictures here and walk right into the crater. There are several pools here, the very hot one (98C) where we can boil eggs and the warmer ones (25 - 50C), where you can soak your feet or take a mud massage for an additional cost. It is believed that the mud's sulfur content can cure various skin diseases.
When you finish your experience in Kawah Domas, you have 2 options: to go same way back to Domas Crater Park or to hike up to Kawah Ratu. As for us, we considered the path from Kawah Domas to Kawah Ratu as the most beautiful part of the trip. It took us about 1 hour to reach the top, walking thru magic forest with many stairs. We met no-one .

Kawah Ratu is the largest crater of Tangkuban Perahu and it is the main attraction. It is one of very few volcanoes which rim you can comfortably reach by car, take few selfies, have some snacks and go home. It might be a bit crowded, but if you take a walk around the rim, there will be less and less tourists.
Trips down to the bottom of the pit are not allowed due to the gas.

3) Kawah Upas
We haven't been here, but I read that Kawah Upas is located about + 1.5 Km from the Kawah Ratu area. If you want to enjoy the beauty of Upas Crater, you can walk along the rim of Kawah Ratu and can be there in about 45 minutes.
4) Kawah Baru
Located at the top of Upas Crater and can be seen from the Kawah Ratu area. Occasionally emits sulfuric fumes from its holes. Visitors are not allowed to get too close to Kawah Baru because there are poisonous gases that can endanger their health.

Duration: 2-6 hours (without car drive - it took us about 3 hours from Jakarta to park entrance)
Price: from Rp 20 000 - Rp 300 000 per person
Entrance fee to the park depends on the day of the week, and if you are a local or tourist. If you happen to be a KITAS holder, have this on hand to be considered as a domestic visitor.
Time: Try to be there as early as possible. Firstly, because the park gets incredibly crowded during the day, especially on weekends. Secondly, the weather might shift throughout the day and the fog can dip into the crater, obscuring views and the ability to see the bottom, or it can start to rain.
When to go: When it it NOT erupting! You have to double-check the news that the volcano is not active (in 2019 whole area was closed). If possible, go on weekday, as it can get very crowded on weekends or public holiday
Mode of transportation: Arriving/departing by own vehicle
What to bring: Trail shoes / running trainers with good profile sole, socks, sports clothes, water (there are many food vendors at the rim), snacks, medication, small backpack, hat, rain gear (during rainy season), sunblock, umbrella, sun glasses, mosquito spray, camera, change of clothes (leave it in car for afterwards, in case it rains), eggs (for boiling, you can buy them there). Be sure to have long clothing with you too. It can be warm nice day, but it can get particularly cold at such high elevations!
Children age: Probably any age for Kawah Ratu, but I wouldn't go to Kawah Domas with a baby because of the sulphur
Price: from Rp 20 000 - Rp 300 000 per person

- Kawah Domas Tour Guide Fee (1-6 people): Rp 100 000 - 200 000 (Rates are not published anywhere. Depending on demand and how much they think they can charge you. Don’t be afraid to negotiate and ensure with your guide that this is a flat fee, upfront. There are plenty of stories of guides attempting to press tourists for extra cash at the end of the trip, particularly if you spend more than an hour with them.)

Farmhouse Susu Lembang
Farmhouse Susu Lembang is artificial village build in European style offering unique atmosphere with many spots for Instagrammable selfies. My family enjoyed the place specially because of animals – you can feed calves (baby cows), sheep, rabbits or interact with various exotic animals like hedgehogs and iguanas.
Duration: 1-2 hour (Without car ride. It takes about 3h from Jakarta)
Price: Rp 25 000 per person (includes cap of milk), Rp 10 000 per car parking
Optional: interaction with animals (around Rp 5 000 - 20 000 per section), European-style costume rental (Rp 75 000 / hour)
Time: 9am – 6pm
When to go: It is recommended to visit on weekdays. If you visit on long weekends, then you have to be patient as the place gets congested, the atmosphere might be very crowded, and you may need to park outside the area.
It is a nice attraction to visit while you are in the area (e.g. because of Tangkuban Perahu). I wouldn’t go there from Jakarta just to see the Farmhouse.

Bird park in Lembang is not the most popular attractions in the area, but if you staying here for few days, it might be worth to visit. Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park Bandung
It's a good place to visit if you are already in the region. Might be good for small children as it has a lot of green space and rabits to pet.
What we truly enjoyed here was the Burangrang restaurant and food. We sat outside at the pleasant terrace, breathing fresh air, everything was clean and the food was delicious. Or maybe we were just too hungry after Tangkubaran Perahu hike.
We stayed here for about 2-3 hours walking around and having late lunch.

Places NOrth of Bandung that we visited, but would not recommend:
1) Floating Market Lembang - definitely not worth to visit
2) Sari Alter Hot Springs - natural hot springs, water was ok, but would be nicer with less people and cleaner facilities like toilets and changing rooms

3. South of Bandung
Kawah Putih
Kawah Putih (White Crater) is the most famous tourist sports in south of Bandung. The sulfurous, volcanic crater lake with a distinctive coloration, rare plants & exotic wildlife was formed after eruption of Mount Patuha. As the name implies, the soil in the area is white due to the sulphur elements. The lake can change color between white and greenish according to the current sulphur content, temperature and weather.
The story of Kawah Putih began in 10th century when there was a great eruption of Mount Patuha. Afterwards many people assumed that this location was haunted because every bird that flew over the area would die. Only in 19th century German botanist Dr Junghuhn discovered the beautiful lake with the strong smell of sulphur.
Kawah Putih is located in mountaneuos area that has an altitude of about 2400 m above the sea level, air can be fresh, between 8-22C, so don’t forget to bring a jacket.
It is not allowed to swim in the lake.
We don't find Kawah Putih as interesting as Tangkuban Perahu (North Bandung, described above). It is relatively long drive from Jakarta (3h) and the only thing that you can do here is to walk around the lake for 1 hour and take pictures.
